The Northmen believed the Valkyrie rode winged horses from Asgard to choose souls among the slain in battle to go with them to Valhalla. The winged steed, Al-Buraq, was said to carry the prophet Muhammad. Also in Islamic writings, Haizum is the horse of the archangel Gabriel. Tulpar is a winged or swift horse in Turkic mythology and Tianma and Chollima were winged 'celestial' horses in Chinese folklore.

The winged horse has also been the symbol of modern companies such as courier company, Pegasus Express, the symbol of Mobil gasoline and even a motion picture company, Tri-Star.
